I love Tales from the Crypt, the show was a big part of my childhood. I watched reruns of this on the SyFy channel back in the day every Saturday night. It was a twisted show filled with blood guts death and sex, that still holds up today. This movie is a lot of fun it feels like the TV show with a much bigger budget and storyline. Unlike episodes of the show this one is a completely original story with no ties to the EW Tales from the Crypt comics.

Tales from the Crypt Demon Knight is in my opinion a much underrated film and a great adaptation of the show. The story follows Frank Braker played by William Sadler on the run from the Collector an evil demon played by the delightful Billy Zane. Billy Zane is what makes the movie, he steals every scene he is in. You can just tell in his performance, he is having a blast playing this over the top character. One of my personal favorite moments is when the main characters find out what the collector really is. He punches cops brains out through his face do a cowboy dance and raises an army of demons who look an awful lot like the crypt keeper.

The film has a nice balance of scares laughs and demons getting their heads blown off, and isn’t that what makes a good horror movie? I think so; in this movie you’ll also see a young Jada Pinkett who gives one hell of a performance as the heroine Jeryline. Looking back her character really was a big deal. I believe this was one of the first instances in a horror film where the hero is a strong African American woman… This is a great movie for a nostalgic movie night or paired up as double feature with Demons. This is the perfect fun horror film to add to a collection of 90’s horror films.
